Polyester and sexual function
[edit]Rats fitted with pants made of 100% polyester, a polyester-cotton blend, 100% cotton, or 100% wool were tested for sexual behavior before dressing and again at 6 and 12 months. The polyester and polyester-cotton groups showed a significantly reduced rate of successful mounting compared to controls, worsening from 6 to 12 months, while cotton and wool groups were unaffected. Polyester fabric generated a measurable electrostatic charge on the penis and scrotum; cotton and wool did not. Six months after the pants came off, sexual behavior in all groups returned to baseline.[1] This is an animal study, but the electrostatic mechanism matches the dielectric differences measured directly between cotton/cellulose fibers and polyethylene terephthalate (polyester) fiber above.
