Emotion
Emotion in the bioenergetic framework isn't separate from physiology, it's stress chemistry expressed. Habitually suppressing emotion keeps the HPA axis and sympathetic nervous system activated longer than an acknowledged, expressed emotion would, extending exposure to cortisol and catecholamines rather than resolving it.
Suppression and mortality
[edit]In a nationally representative US cohort of 729 adults followed for 12 years (111 deaths), people scoring at the 75th percentile on an emotional-suppression scale had 35% higher all-cause mortality and 70% higher cancer mortality than those at the 25th percentile; the cardiovascular-mortality increase (47% higher) didn't reach statistical significance in this sample.[1]
Physiological mechanism
[edit]A significant stressor activates the HPA axis and sympathetic nervous system whether or not the associated emotion gets expressed or resolved. Elevated catecholamines and cortisol modulate immune function directly: cortisol suppresses inflammation acutely, but chronic exposure produces glucocorticoid resistance, removing that brake and allowing systemic inflammatory signaling to persist. Sustained, unresolved stress is further linked to reduced vagal tone (impairing the parasympathetic nervous system's ability to restore homeostasis) and to shifts in T-helper cell balance and autoantibody production implicated in autoimmune disease.
A quantitative review of experimental and correlational studies found emotion suppression measurably alters acute physiological stress responses in healthy people.[2]
This doesn't mean a given illness is "caused by" suppressed emotion, or that it can be resolved by thought alone; unresolved emotional stress functions as one more load on an already burdened system, and lightening it can create real physiological room to recover.
Expression as intervention
[edit]Emotional Awareness and Expression Therapy is built directly on this premise, that expressing rather than suppressing emotion measurably improves outcomes in stress-linked conditions.[3] Dance-movement therapy lowered the cortisol awakening response, a marker of chronic stress load, in an older-adult trial.[4]
Other body-based approaches described in this literature include unstructured sitting with attention on physical sensation, journaling, tension and trembling release (TRE) techniques modeled on how animals discharge a freeze response, group or animal co-regulation, breathing practices, and full-body stretching.
