Sweet oranges, and the fresh juice squeezed from them, provide an antiinflammatory, antioxidant, antiestrogenic effect on top of their sugar content.[1] Milk and fruit juice are osmotically balanced with minerals and sugar, so unlike drinking plain water, they don't tend to cause fluid imbalance in a hypothyroid person.[2]

Ripeness and sourness

[edit]

If oranges aren't sweet, straining the juice won't prevent the irritation sour juice can cause.[3] Commercial juice often has added citric acid to compensate for sourness, and citric acid binds magnesium and calcium, which may account for blood pressure changes some people notice with commercial juice.[4]

Commercial juice processing

[edit]

Since 2006, most frozen concentrate and "pulp-free" commercial orange juice has been processed with enzymes that liquefy pulp and keep it suspended in the juice, changing it from the simple squeezed product it used to be.[5] Juice in glass containers, or squeezed from sweet oranges directly, avoids this.[6]

Cognitive function

[edit]

Flavonoid-rich orange juice acutely improves cognitive function. A study in healthy middle-aged males (aged 30-65) found that a single 240 mL serving containing 272 mg flavonoids enhanced objective and subjective cognition over 6 hours, including improved reaction time and working memory.[7]
